Self Portrait by Bree Mercado called the VOID
medium: acrylic, graphite, charcoal on paper
the Void is a self portrait I completed back in 2017. I was in a pretty dark place back then and the void was a literal portrayal of that dark place. It is ironic to revisit this piece because I'm now exploring the space, or the void, between people.
In the past my work explored individual figures...myself, then others, and now I'm exploring multiple figures within one piece. As I am doing this, I begin to ask the question to myself, why do people feel a space between themselves and their loved ones, or their friends, or family, or whomever....why? Perhaps the space they feel in between, is not the void the feel between, but rather the void the feel within themselves.
I've also thought about the fact, no one can ever truly know me because they can't be in my mind...with the exception of higher being... This thought made me feel so alone before. Maybe that is why we feel a void or space between others.
But now...Now in my life, I've found myself in a space of connection, no longer in the VOID. I also wonder...how did that happen?
